- Jacob J. Goossen was the youngest child born to Jacob A. and Paulina (Ortman) Goossen. He was born March 19, 1914 on a farm northwest of Marion, South Dakota and died January 13, 2009. He received his education in Riverdale School District No. 80.
Jacob married Ethel Rose Deckert on August 24, 1937. They lived and farmed on the home place, where he was born, until 1987 when they moved into Marion. Jake was on the Riverdale school board for many years. He also was the telephone line repairman for several years for the farmer-owned telephone cooperative in his community. He was active in the Marion Church of God. As long as he was able, he enjoyed going to church and was a faithful choir member for many years. He also sang in duets, trios and quartets.
After Jake and Ethel moved to Marion, they were the church custodians and were also involved in the Marion Senior Citizen's Center. Jake also enjoyed woodworking. He and Ethel enjoyed traveling to visit family. They enjoyed trips to Indiana, Texas, the East Coast, the West Coast and also to Canada. Ethel died July 22, 2003.
Jake spent the past three and one half years in the Tieszen Memorial Assisted Living Center and Nursing Home.
Jacob is survived by five children: Shirley (Raymond) Mittan of Brookings, South Dakota, Kenneth (Linda) Goossen of Carrollton, Texas, Elaine Goossen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Robert (Bonnie) Goossen of Renner, South Dakota, and Jim (Mona) Goossen of Chesterfield, Indiana. Nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Tom (Cindy) Mittan and Thomas, Sarah, and Isaac of Brookings, South Dakota, Dan Mittan of Toronto, South Dakota, Susan Mittan (Marcus) Johansen and Bethany of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Terry Goossen of Dallas, Texas, Noble (Beverly) Goossen and Caelyn of Carrollton, Texas, Todd (Laura) Goossen and Lexy of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Trent Goossen and Alex and Shane of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Nicholas Goossen and Rachel Goossen of Chesterfield, Indiana.
Goossen of Chesterfield, Indiana. Jacob was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel. Three brothers: Wilhelm, Aaron, and Frank; three sisters: Lydia Arbeiter, Leah Goossen and Clara Goossen.
