Hi, my name is Nicky Goosen (born Louwrens Nicholas Goosen). My father is Marthinus Johannes Goosen (born 1945-03-03 in Belfast, SA). My mother was Elizabeth Isabella Goosen (nee Magor, born in Durban on 30-11-1939). I have two sisters (Theresa and Natasha) and one brother (Marthinus Johannes). We all stay, except for my mom who passed away in 2000, on the East Rand near Johannesburg. Great site and nice to see all the Goosens from all over the world, even Goosens that cannot speak English/Afrikaans.

My Grandmother was Mary Goosen who was born somewhere in the Cape Province in about 1902. She died in East London in the late 60's/ early 70's. She had a daughter, my mother, Vera Joyce, born in East London, in 1925. Do you, or anyone else, perhaps have any information on this branch of the Goosen Family or have any idea where I could find it? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

This is so weird! I've just googled my father's name, Gerrit Carel Goosen, and found this site! The weird thing is how similar all the first names here are! My father's brother's name is Willem, and by chance there is someone else here called Gerrit Goosen who said something to Willem Goosen, but unfortunately I dont understand! Well just to let you know I'm another one of the most stubborn generation known! I'll come back again! Rikus Goosen

The following is the beginning of a short history of my fathers family of Goosen. I will gladly shared infor about our families. I have information that I will galdly share about the family life in Russia and the Mennonites settlements where they lived. Beginning about 1790, thousands of Mennonites, largely of Dutch extraction, left Germany for the Central Steppes of Russia. The Czar had invited Europeans to come and settle this vast plains. Since the Dutch Mennonites were being persecuted by the prominent Protestant religious followers, the move was not a hard decision to make. Here was a new opportunity to live, farm and be free from religious intolerance. Along with other Ethnic groups, they settled in southern Russia, thinking that this would be a lasting home for them and their future families. However, in 1871 the Czars bureaucrats began a program to make all the Ethnic groups that settled in the Central Steppes become completely Russian. They were to learn the Russian language, be conscripted into the military and integrate into the Russian culture.* When the Ethic groups balked at letting go of their heritage, the Czars officials began a different course which was to just throw the foreigners out of Russia or the groups just immigrate on their own. Hi My grandfather was a Goosen and he and my grandmother had 8 children, 5 girls and 3 boys. My father is Kenneth John Goosen and I am his eldest daughter. I know that I have lots of cousins, but when my paremts divirced, I lost touch with almost all of my father's family. My father grew up in the Transkei, near Umtata, on a place calle Nqandule (not sure about the spelling). His one sister married a Benz, the other married a Robinson. I remember some cousins' names; Pieter Goosen, Rina Goosen, Danie Benz. I would like to trace our family tree, as well as connect again with some of my family.

My great grandfather was Peter Goosen, born in 1883 or 1884 in South Dakota, married 11-24-07 to Mary D. Unruh in Turner County, South Dakota, USA. He lived in McCook County, South Dakota, USA. Census records placed Peter and Mary Goosen in Dawson County Montana as early as 1920. I am unable to determine his parents or siblings. The census records state his parents were from Russia and dutch was the language spoken in the home. I know they were also Mennonites. Any links or information would be greatly appreciated. Peter and Mary's son, Walter Eugene Gossen was my grandfather. Yes the Goosen somehow switched to Gossen over the years.
